Just curious, did any of you new purchasers decide AGAINST colors like Jet Black or Black Sapphire Metallic or Monaco Blue based the chance of getting swirls on your paint being more visible due to a darker color?

My first BMW back in 1998 was black and didnt get swirls for about a year or so I bet. But I've read several threads and it seems like its inevitable with darker colors, even washing it yourself it seems easy to eventually get a bad cloth or something. I know I know there are threads where you use certain cloths and soaps and waxes and polish it like its a fine wine glass, but what about when you just cant wash it every... single... time at your house? I'd hate to pick a color I don't deem quite as good-looking because Im trying to avoid swirls, but then again I know that sometimes I just wont be able to wash the car myself, and don't want a black or dark blue car with swirls on it 6 months in.

I'm looking to buy my 3rd BMW (current BMW is a 2000 that is Steel Gray, no swirls!) in the next few months and I personally think the darker colors look best on a BMW, but am afraid of the tendency to develop swirls or show swirls more than other colors. My 2000 Steel Gray doesnt have a single swirl on it and its been through many regular car washes, but my 1998 black one seemed to get swirls pretty quick, using the same car washes.

You'd think in this day and age they would make a paint strong enough and protective enough to avoid swirls, no? Especially the darker colors...

Anyway, I'm interested in any opinions (other than the ones that go something like "never let anyone else wash your car!" or "those are the risks you take if you let others was your car!" I know those already :P)

Actually newer cars swirl much easier do to the clear coat used because of environmental concerns. Your 2000 Steel Gray more than likely has swirls they just don’t show up like they do on a dark color.

If you take your car to brush car washes and car washes that have the attendants do a final drying with towels you will get swirls... guaranteed. They only way to minimize swirls is to wash the car yourself using proper techniques and quality detailing products.

Totally agree. swirls develop because you put them there. It is impossible to have a black car in the bright sun and see NO swirls. If you are THAT anal about it don't buy black. But you can minimize swirling by using quality MF or 100% made in usa towels and washmitts, and not going to autowashes. If you are handy with a Pc or rotary you can always buff out the swirls and if you are a weekend detailer there are many products out there that temporarily fill swirls for a showroom look.

consider all this in your decision.

As you can see below.. I have 2005 Jet Black. I had a 96-328 Jet Black and a 99-528 Jet Black. This paint is much softer on my 2005. I've just purchased a PC and all the polishes/pads. I intend to go at it this weekend........

I still think Black looks the best..... obviously. Hopefully the PC (and a little more care) will be the answer.
