Worth a good laugh - WSJ invents new 330i feature

From tomorrow´s WSJ:

The Contenders
Model/Notable Feature
Audi A4/On the road, the A4 is more forgiving than the BMW on harsh pavement.
BMW 330i/It has active steering, which automatically turns the wheels to counteract a skid.
Infiniti G35/It's cheaper than the BMW and gets better gas mileage.
Lexus IS 350/It can be packed with features such as a radar cruise control that can predict frontal crashes.

That is actually a feature of active steering.

Of course, it isn't really the point of AS, which they seem have missed (or decided to intentionally ignore to save space). But they didn't make it up.

If the driver is trained on avoiding skids, perhaps, but active steering by itself doesn´t do that, does it?

Real feature, I believe the technical name is Yawing Moment Control.

Example:

Driver is driving straight ahead, steering pointed straight ahead.

Wheels on the left side hit a puddle of water, pulling the vehicle to the left.

YMC senses that steering angle and vehicle direction don't match.

YMC, via AS, gently turns wheels to right, avoiding skid.

In conjunction with DSC, it seems to be able to do this, but to what extent, I´m not sure: When the yaw sensors detect an oversteer situation (the back end beginning to step out), it clicks in a few degrees of opposite lock

Active steering is capable of dialing in opposite lock without any input from the driver. When the car detects a slide, it has the ability to counter-steer up to 5 degrees, although I am not sure whether that is 5 degrees of steering input or wheel-line movement.

Active steering has other features than variable ratio steering. If the car detects differing road surfaces under the wheels on the left side of the car as opposed to under the right side of the car, it will adjust the steering so that it is on center and also reduce vibration. In day to day driving this is a lot more practical than you would expect. If you are driving on a road where one side of it is under shallow water, whilst other cars are having to slow down and are constantly dancing from left to right, active steering allows the driver to steer a course as if there was nothing unusual about the road surface at all.
