Why do we have to pay for software upgrades?
Bimmerfesters: I've been reading the posts about "software upgrades" very carefully since I bought my car via ED about 2 months ago. And from them I get the idea that "we" have to pay for this upgrade instead of letting BMWNA take care of it. In other words, we have to cover for the expense of the upgrade at our respective dealerships. My question is: Why? Weren't we promised bimmers with features like DRL, fancy windshield wipers and the like? I recall reading the brochure intently while salivating over "new" features before ordering and then buying. It is not our fault, that they released a semi-finish product...(Sound like Bill Gates is working for BMW now) Anybody with me? Please correct me if I'm wrong....Thanks | | Reply » Why do we have to pay for software upgrades? | I think (hope) you might be mistaken. I was under the impression that these software upgrades would be covered at no cost to the owner, to correct problems that should have been set straight from the beginning.

"Programming updates" change things such as the setting of various features (DRL's, etc.). Your dealer should have gone over the options with you before you tok delivery, and delivered the configuration you wanted. If a feature wasn't available or they didn't configure it the way you want, they should change it for free when they can.
If you decide you'd like a feature to work differently, some dealers will charge for that and some won't. Often if you combine that with another service visit, you can get it done for a lower charge, or even for free.
A "software update" actually replaces the software in some part of the car. Sometimes this is done as part of a recall or service bulletin, and sometimes customers just ask for it. This can be a time-consuming project (over 4 hours) and sometimes doesn't "take", requiring the control module to be sent to BMW for re-coding. Thus, a dealer doesn't like to do one "just because the customer asked for it", since it ties up an expensive piece of equipment. Again, if there is a legitimate reason to do it, it should be covered as long as the car is in warranty.

That's a different "software upgrade" - the computer at the dealer that "talks" to your car to configure the options (it is called the "SSS" computer) needs an update in order to understand your car. If the dealer couldn't program something for you because their computer needed an update, they shouldn't charge for doing it later on.

As mentioned earlier a lot of this stuff SHOULD have been in the car to begin with. We are the bunch that jumped on the E90 when it launched we shouldn't have to be punished and pay for things that are going to be in the later production of the same exact car.
Makes no sense IMO.... BMWNA should treat us like gold for being beta testers!
I don't think we'll have any worries with paying for software updates, just report another problem (seatbelt clicking sound, vibration when driving, etc.) and when you make that appointment say "also i would like to get the latest software updates that were released in sept).
