 Different Size Tires

What would be the consequences of putting 225/50/17 tires in place of the std 225/45/17 tires on the non-sport E90 ? The reason is a long story but I was trying to get some feedback as to the possible effect on handling and speedometer !!

The lower profile tires would throw your speedometer off by about 3.5%, because the outer diameter [wheel + rubber] would be slightly reduced. Thus, when the speedometer previously read 60 mph at a given true road speed, it would now read 62 mph. The usual means of plus sizing would be to replace the 225/50 x 17 with a 245/45 x 17, which would result in a negligible speedometer error. Of course, the new tire is 20 millimeters wider, and you would have to be sure that was compatible with the wheels, or else go to a 1/2 inch wider wheel. When in doubt consult a good expert such as Tire Rack [http://www.tirerack.com]. P.S. I am assuming there was a misprint in your original posting. The non sport uses the 50 series tires.....

As far as handling goes, the taller side wall tire (50 series over 45 series) will handle more poorly. The reason is that the added sidewall height will cause the tire to flex more and thus make the car feel more wobly. How much of a difference will it make? I don't know exactly but there will be one. The other trade off is that the higher profile tire will be a smoother ride!
