 E90 Starting / Stopping Quirks

Bought a '06 325i / Steptronic two days ago and have driven it about 350 miles. I would appreciate input on a couple of quirks when starting from rest and when coming to a stop.

I've noticed a hesitation when accelerating from rest for a second or so before the power seems to kick in. No rough idle or hiccup in the engine - it feels like turbo lag. I'm not looking for "jack rabbit" starts. It just seems strange that when you first step on the gas, nothing seems to happen for a second before the car starts to accelerate . It seems as if the ECU was programmed this way. Anyone else notice this??

I'm very impressed with the seamless shifts of the tranny except for another quirk when coming to a stop. When I am slowing down to stop and the speed is down to 2mph or so, the tranny seems to downshift from 2nd to 1st and kinda of jerks the car forward. This is out of character with the smoothness of the tranny the rest of the time.

Most of the sport sedans I've owned over the last couple of years have been sticks, but I regularly drive automatics and have not noticed this on other vehicles. I also own a Porsche Boxster (manual) and an Acura MDX(auto).

Overall, I absolutely love the car. I drive about 35k miles/yr and plan to put about 25k/yr on the 325.

I have the same thing with my 325i and have read other post about this issue. It doesn't seem nearly as bead when go to the sport or manual mode. I'm starting to think they may have detuned the 3.0 a bit to widen the performance margin between the 325 and 330 and this is a the result.

Once again this changed with the transmission mode. Of course this is not a problem when operated manually. Mine is a little different. After I've come to a soft stop I can feel it downshift right after I've stopped. This is also common and has been discussed elsewhere. People have refered to it as lunging. This only happens to my car in the standard mode, sport and manual seem to be fine.

Same here, but there is something going on with the slight hesitation and lurching tranny. I'm curious if BMW is aware of this and if they are working on these issues. Might just be some quirks we have to learn to live with or just drive in the sport on manual mode all of the time. BTW, the hesitation does feel just exactly like the turbo lag on my Passat which kicks in at 1800 rpm.

There is a 'brake hold' function, which can give you a very slight delay when you begin moving from a dead stop - lasts a few tenths of a second. This comes into play only if you are on a slight incline, up or down. Perhaps that is what you are noticing. Living here in the coastal plain [Hilton Head Island, SC], that effect is rarely felt, although these days one must be quite worried about tidal surges from hurricanes.

Automatics donīt have the "brake hold" function.

Many owners report a big improvement or total cure in the hesitation problem as the automatic transmission learns your driving habits.

No but they have the smooth stop function.

As for quicker starts, you can have that by putting the transmission in Sport mode (Left from D), otherwise the car is more into economic driving and has a tendancy to start in 2nd. Also, it should get quicker by itself during the next few hundred miles.

How does the smooth stop function work? The lurch I experience when it down shifts from 2nd to 1st is not very smooth.
