Design of the E90

HI!

My first thread here, I'm a new member. This looks like a very nice site!
I'm a guy at the age of 30 from Norway who lives in Oslo (I will try to write english as best as I can) and I just LOVE BMW, and have loved it since I was a little boy. I've always said that my dream is to own a BMW when I grew up, and my dream came true in 2000. I bought the E36 320iS Coupe in black met. 93 model (I would like to buy a 325i (or M3

and newer but cars are very expensive in Norway). Now my ultimate dream car is the E46 M3 but it cost NOK 950.000 new here.. (about $145.000).

Yeah, I love BMW but specially the 3-series coupe models. Coupe's are so much nicer than the saloons I think. Especially the E46 coupe vs. saloon is very different.

But what about the E90? Can that car look good in 2-door design? I don't think that car looks like a BMW. What about the back-lights! Taken from a Nissan? And front-lights! Not nice. And the design. NO WAY! It looks like the new Audi, where the front is one part all the way down (not as ugly as the Audi, though). Of course it's nicer than Audi and many other cars but the E46 is much nicer. I don't like the 6-series either, it's....weird. And the 7-series... not nice (but now it's better after the design tune-up). And I don't like the interior either.

Ok, now some questions:

Is is true that E90 is only 4-doors. And coupe and cab is other numbers (E91, 92)? Is a E46 coupe a E47?

Now I'm on my way picking up the a new E46 M3...bye! Kidding.

I am sure somebody has made similar comments when the prior generation first came out. This is a brand new design and it takes time to appreciate or dislike a design.

Its kinda like when you have a beard for a long time and then cut it - you feel like its not you in the mirror.

Personally I like to look at the overall picture - because perfection comes with its overhead costs.

I am getting a great engine, a brand new design, drive the ultimate driving machine(BMW Brand loyalty), get a selection of many choices depending on my needs (NAV, Bluetooth Etc), and have great handling - all those between 32 to 45 K depending on the options (USA) ? (+other things I might have forgotten)

Well I think its a great overall picture and a car that I would like to drive.

Designs are not changed just for looks there are other things that car companies consider such as cost, performance, differentiation , market segmentation etc. and I have confidence in BMW that when they change the design they have a good reason for that.

So, I say give it some time, drive and enjoy the overall not just the design.

BMW new 3 is almost perfect and you can not make everybody in the end.

The new 3 is just fine, and the original comment of this thread looked too much like free bashing. If you don't like the looks of it, just go buy something else.

Well....I think it's just his honest opinion. Lots of BMW fans have/had problems with the tail lights of the new 3. I bought one and I'm not 100% "in love" with everything about the design. But I bought it to drive as well as to look at.

The 6 is pretty weird looking....I think MBZ does a nicer job on it's SL 500. I think the Z series is ugly compared to the SLK MBZ...and the 7 had it's design issues too although I really like the facelift.....much cooler than the S Class.

Let the guy have an opinion.

I called this bashing because there was not a single positive comment on anything, so I think the definition applies here.

As for the 6, I don't like it's tail lights and a picture of an upcoming M3 in Car & Driver raises the scary prospect to see a similar treatment on the e90 Coupe.

It's not bashing, I am a real BMW fanatic (since I was a kid). I just think BMW are going to far in their design on new models lately. It's my real opinion.

I just love BMW an the driving abilities and that special BMW-feeling. No one can match that, not even Mercedes. But the new design isn't BMW-worthy. Mercedes SL vs. BMW 6? M looks like a expensive, luxurious car, The 6 looks old. But the 6-series looks better live than on pics, that I can say. It's very wide and big and I know it drives better than the M. But design is very important. Just like women. The first thing you see with a girl is her looks. But the 8 series is much nicer than the old SL, though. The Z isn't bad at all, but compoared to the new Mercedes mini cab it's a bit less prettier.

Of course, the E90 isn't ugly but the lights are very important to the design, and I think they did a bad job here. And I think the front spoiler could look better too. The 5-series is also a bit strange but it's nicer than the E90. The lights fits the car much more and are more pretty.

But I look forward seeing the E90 coupe. It has to be a lot prettier than the 4 door. They must do something about the tail-lights. Just what they did with E46 saloon vs. coupe.

But the E46 coupe is the perfect car for me. I love everything about it, the design is perfect. This is the right look for this car! And the lights are outstanding. Perfect.

I SHALL buy this car someday, but I can't afford more than 325i but it's enough for me.

I think BMW still makes the best cars but not the nicest ones. But the E46 is 100 % BMW. No other car brand has a model like this. Audi have tried but BMW's 6-sylnder is better then the 8-sylinder so why even bother. And Audi design is not for me. BMW has at least a design of their own.

But I will of course give it a try. I travel to the car show in Frankfurt in september. I will takes some peeks then. And I shure that the E90 coupe is a better looking car. I hope I can se it there.
