Anyone know if a remote starter can be installed in a E90 330i? If so, any brands you would recommend to purchase or to stay away from? |

When I was in Germany doing European Delivery I picked up the German E90 Accessory catalog. It has a picture of what I think is a remote starter that calls your cell phone when your car is warm. :-) It says in development availability starts 09/05.

I am also interested in remote start. I currently have it in my accord and it works wonders during the winter months here in the northeast. I hear the chip in the key will be a problem installing a remote starter in the car. Can somebody please confirm this and recommend a auxillary heating unit? what the hell is that? is that a european thing? I don't know how u can warm up a car without actually starting the engine itself. thanks

That is not a remote starter. It´s an independant gasoline vehicle heater that can heat up the car (and the engine coolant) without the engine running.
The english term I believe is "independant vehicle heater" or "auxiliary heater"
The phone is shown because it can be remotely activated via a phonecall.
The engine is not started.
For remotely warming the car, this is by far the best method. Remote starting the engine and having it idle until the engine is warm is by far the WORST thing you can do to your engine. It eats away usefull engine life in spades. Nothing is worse for an engine than idling when cold.
So please, if you like your car: Don´t get remote start (unless your a member of the Corleone family ). And never fire up your car when cold and leave it to idle until warm. Just get in imediately and drive off. BMW´s warm up in less than 5 minutes when driven. Get a coat if you have to.

I am also a big fan of auxiliary heating systems which you will find installed on trucks and buses in the U.S.
BMW NA does not like them because they fear they will catch fire and cause lawsuits.
