Alarm vs. Lojack
We were annoyed that an alarm did not come standard with a car at this price point. We are deciding whether to install the alarm, Lojack, Lojack with early warning, or all of the above. Could I get some pros & cons?
Thanks!

You might want to compare Lojack with BMW assist as well.
Even without alarm, if you have BMW assist, when you find your car is stolen and report it to BMW assist, they can track it using GPS and locate it. Just like lojack. Only difference is LoJack can locate cars even with engine off, whereas BMW assist can track a car when engine is on or up to 10 minutes after engine shutoff
BMW assist has a cool feature, if you are in an accident where airbags are deployed (or if you press the SOS button after an accident), BMW will send appropriate emergency vehicles to your location, even if you don't know where you are.
Both LoJack and BMW assist can not trace signal when car is inside a steel ship container on a truck / ship. I say save your money on LoJack. The car is hard to steal since the key is much harder to replicate. If your car comes with premium pkg, stick with BMW assist for the 1st year since its free then decide later what you want to do. You can always get LoJack later if you so desire.

The only other consideration in addition to spaceman's thorough post is if your insurance will discount you for the alarm. Over time, that could make up for your layout costs, depending on your coverage.
I opted for the alarm - although reluctantly. In the end, the extra peace of mind gained makes it worth something, IMHO.

You get 1 discount for a passive theft deterrent device. this can be an automatically activated car alarm or an inmobilizor. BMW's qualify for the passive device because of the Coded Drive Away feature in our cars. The alarm is just for peace of mind.

Of course the insurance paid for the damage, but the hassles and frustration we went through as a result were enough for me to never pass on that option again. We have since installed an aftermarket alarm in her car.
