I finally saw an E90 with the folding rear seats and ski bag package. I either missed something, like a not fully implemented feature, or am quite amazed at the lack of design logic with it. The ‘valet key’ that can’t open the trunk is meaningless for keeping the trunk secured. The tray that holds the ski bag is removed from the front, not the trunk. Thus, it’s easy to reach back and fold the seats from within the car, and proceed to unlock the trunk. So much for a secure area where to leave anything of value. Don’t need to be an experienced thief to pick the lock, any rock on the side of the road is sufficient to break a window and get to the trunk. With the cold weather package, the headlight jet streams immediately tell anyone that the trunk is unsecured. If I decide to stop somewhere on the way home from work, and someone sees me move a laptop bag from the front to the trunk, he can pretty much have it if he wants it within 10 sec. Even if I do something to secure the pass through, anyone who knows the standard configuration of the 3-series won't get deterred until after having broken a window. I have a similar beef with the alarm. From a block away, if I don’t see the blinking nose on the mirror, I already know the car isn’t alarmed and an easy prey. Has this always been the case with the previous models?

It's actually easier than that ... ZCW or no ZCW... just break open the glove box, flip the trunk switch, and pop the trunk with the trunk release kickpanel switch. The E46 design was better.

When you have already allowed someone to drive your car, in most cases you only need some deterrent to them going through your glove box or trunk, not a fortress that defends them. Any of these two scenarios is a lot more than I would expect anyone I allowed to drive my car to be willing to do. If you are that worried about those to whom you give driving privlages of your car, you probably shouldn't allow them to drive it in the first place.

Edit: I didn't notice that the discussion moved to thieves and not just valet type situations. I'm going to have to look into that as I have the cold weather package but never really looked at the ski bag setup.
