I have a question about the steptronic auto's on BMWs. For example, if i decide i want to cruise around in 2nd at like 6000RPM (7000rpm rev limit) in manual mode will the auto change the gear for me or will i cruise at 6k for any time i want? Does it automaticly change only when you hit the rev limiter? Also, how much slower are the changes compared to a standard manual?

I can answer this much: if you are in M mode you will stay in that gear...there is no automatic upshifting. So, yes you can stay at 6000 rpm as long as you want. I don't know what happens if you redline it without touching the shifter.
Exceptions to gear shifting in M mode are the downshift if you stop or get too slow for the selected gear. If you are in M 5 for example and you hit the brakes and stop...the car will reset automatically to M2. Once you start again you will stay in M 2 until you manually upshift. Also, the car won't downshift into a gear that will result in overreving. I hope this helps.
Anyone else like to chime in to correct or clarify?

is that a change from the E46? My step would auto shift when you hit close to red-line. But that's what i remembed.

Correction...Steptronic will upshift if you get too close to redline.
