 How many E90 owners are/were E46 owners?

Curious. I love the exterior but I am very, very disapointed in the non I-Drive dash and the location of the new window buttons. Me-thinks I"m holding my E46 for a while or buying a ZCP M3. I want more direct feedback and less DSC, Less electronica, less active steering. What I really, really want is my interior re-sheathing in the E90 body, with the more powerful engine tuned to 300hp. Oh well. Anyone else have similar thoughts???

I was an E46 owner. Made the trade up -- was just time -- old car got old.

Former E46 owner. No active steering here. The E90 handles better, accelerates better, brakes better, and gets phenominal gas mileage for 255HP on tap. I have the standard dash and prefer this simpler look to the E46.

Dislikes:

Window switches on the door
Radio face not visible with polarized sunglasses
Sunroof only closes with ignition on
Trunk locks seperately with the key only and not with the remote

Dislikes are minor nits

- Non iDrive dash: I agree, too simplistic, ugly assymetrical and overcrowded center console (Sorry I don't want to offend, this is just a matter of personal taste).

- Window buttons: This is the standard used in the industry, it's not the e90 that is to blame but the e46. The front passenger would always search his door panel when trying to open that window.

- DSC: Can be switched off. A saver in real bad weather.

- Active steering: Don't buy it if it bothers you, spend the extra cash on other options, no one is twisting your arm to get it.

- 300hp: Hmmm... Wait for twin-turbo 335i? Is 255hp really not enough???

IMHO, most of the complaints are nitpicking, because you can switch off or get rid of some features by not paying for them (That's the meaning of the term "option" ).

All very valid. That said; It used to be that BMW had the perfect package and that everything that they offered was something you really cared for. I suppose I shouldn't be critical on a BMW site
BMW's tag line is 'The Ultimate driving machine' yes? So why does it make sense for the ergonomics of a new platform to go backwards? I would say that not being able to see the I-drive screen with polarized glass is a serious fcuk up. And no...255hp is not enough to justify me giving BMWNA 500/mo over my paid for, fully sorted, nice ergonomically designed 328i.

Now, I would LOVE to have a newer model, freshened look, more hp, better mileage etc but since their package isn't 'perfect' as it was in the past...the door has been opened for other models. THe GS430 is a much more effective package and much, much more reliable with a nav package that is touch and much more friendly.

I think its a shame that the packaging of the 3 series has now become a ploy to move up-market (ie...don't like the dash, buy the I-Drive to make up for the aesthetic'.

Wolf,
With the new location of the windows....why care what the passenger does??? its a DRIVERS car. If you want luxury buy Lexus.

If you make a slow left turn with a manual and have your left hand on the wheel but say, a valet wants to talk to you...well you have to move your hand off the steering wheel rather than simply slip your shifting hand off the stick and 'tick' the down button. Poor ergonomics in my mind. Also, the slop of the new door handle/pull while aesthetically pleasing means you have to reach around the rest and 'reach' for the button. While this is 'nitpicking' the E46 had EVERYTHING at yoru fingertips.

As for me...I'm moving up-market...ie, holding my E46 and waiting til '08 for the M3..screw it..maybe they'll straighten out some of the creases on the dash...dash looks 'hard and creased'...not ergonomic....Feel as I have some opinion in the matters of design as I"m an architect and have a thing for visual weight/proportion etc. Glad you like it..just doesn't do it for me. Contemplating 997.
regards
