I don't have nav in my E46. I was driving an E90 over the weekend and really enjoyed the nav, which surprised me.
Maybe it's too soon for anyone to know, but is there a real difference between the operation of E90 nav vs. E46? I understand the interface thru iDrive is probably different.
Thanks, Don

Thanks, Don | I have a 2005 330cic and a 2006 330i both with nav. I haven't played with the 06's nav much yet, but from what I can tell, the nav operation is about the same. Obviously programming it is different because of i-Drive. One difference is that the new nav has the standard perspective and an alternative display. See pics:

Thanks! Don

Thanks, Don | The E90's Navigation, much like all the new systems (from the new 1-series to the 7-series) has some significant improvements, particularly:
- The quality of the image displayed is much better (I'm not just talking about the fact that the screen quality is better). Smoother lines, easier to read fonts for street names, etc. I'm sure the new system allows much higher bit-depth and anti-aliasing which the old sytem cannot do, hence the roads are a little blocky and the fonts hard to read on the E46. - Much faster screen refreshes, particularly on zooming - Perspective view could be a bit of a gimmick
The interface is similar but better on the E90.
On the E46 the knob on the screen with which you make changes is nothing more than a little iDrive knob when you think about it. The only difference is that the iDrive allows lateral movemet (left, right, up, down, etc) in addition to the rotate & push.
This improvement with the iDrive makes a destination selection via the Map View much slicker: - Scroll around on map in 8 directions with lateral movement of the iDrive Controller - Rotate the iDrive Controller to zoom in/out - Push the button to 'select' the destination.
The 'Force-Feedback' Controller is VERY clever... once you get used to it you really can do most things by 'feel'
When my lease runs out I'll definitely be getting the E90 with iDrive for the Navigation and other useful functions: - All car/key memory settings are set using the iDrive system - finally! - Park Distance Control visual display is very helpful. - I could go on..

I too think that iDrive is but an evolution of this. I wonder if BMW had kept the little knob and never named it "iDrive" whether it would have ever become as controversial.
