The first four years are covered by BMW. How much should I budget for the following four years/ 50, 000 miles? I have heard a BMW oil change alone costs $150. Are BMWs reliable enough not to purchase an extended warranty?

I believe BMW's are reliable enough to not need an extended warranty and I have not done so. My reasoning was to save the $500 or whatever the warranty costs and put it towards any future repair, if I need to.
In the meantime, I maintain my car by replacing items as BMW used to recommend before they had to pay for them, e.g. coolant changes every 2 yrs, transmission and diff fluid changes, etc.
For the first 4 years, you are covered by the BMW maintenance program. If you want to do interim oil changes, use an independent mechanic, they are generally much cheaper and BETTER than most BMW dealers.
End of the day you have to bear in mind it is a machine and may go wrong, but I am on my third BMW. On my current car, 2001 E46 325i, I have had no major problem outside the warranty period (passed 50K miles about a year ago).

First off remember that you can buy an extended warranty and/or an extended maintenance program. Some people confuse the two.
Maintenance and repairs are usually much cheaper if performed outside of the dealership. I always look for an independent shop that's a member of the IAIBMWSP
Some dealerships offer pretty good deals on oil changes as a way to keep people used to using them for work. One local dealer here charges $75 for an oil and filter change with synthetic, and you can schedule a while-you-wait appointment, and I think they'll wash your car. That's not bad considering an oil change with synthetic at Jiffy Lube costs almost that much.
