I'm thinking of trading in my subaru for the new 3. Does anyone have tips on how to negotiate a higher trade-in? Should I try to get a better deal through a higher trade-in value or a lower price on the 3? Should I insist on getting at least the Kelley Blue Book trade-in value?

Last, I had a custom shop install sound proofing in the doors, floor, and ceiling of the subaru. i also had a new cd deck put in and an amplifer and subwoofer in the trunk. Can I expect to get more money for this? Or will I get less since the custom shop messed around with the insides of the car. Maybe I shouldn't tell the dealer about the sound proofing and remove the amplifer and subwoofer.

You will get the Galves value for the trade. Most dealers laugh at the KBB numbers.

You extras will get you little in a dealer trade in. But more in a private sale.

Sell it privately. That's the only way to go. You'll take a big hit doing a trade in, that's common knowledge. I wouldn't expect to get much for the mods, and in fact you might be right about them actually *decreasing* the value slightly.

For example, I personally would prefer a used BMW with the Factory HK System and OEM Factory Alarm as opposed to some cheapo aftermarket alarm and stereo.

Ditto that on sell privately...trade values have been in the tank for years now...part of the reason leases with high residuals are good deals...

I have sold my last 3-4 cars that I did not lease via autotrader.com, works very well once you price at the market.

This should help ease the pain of trade-in.
