From the videos that I have seen [marketing et al], the iDrive nav looks improved over the standalone nav. This is not from personal experience, but reading forums online, many people in the past complained about German car navigation lacking to other mfg's. The new BMW Professional nav looks to include some views and modes that weren't available on the previous 3 navigation option, such as a semi-perspective view; data entry still looks to be a bear unfortunately.

My only experience with decent nav systems so far has been a Garmin StreetPilot III unit and a USB GPS for my Tablet PC, so don't take my words as meaning too much!
