Car and Driver, in addition to Motor Trend, has now praised the E90 as superior to previous year models, both in performance and interior and exterior design.
"BMW's classic gets even hotter."
They also take a veiled shot at the old BMW crowd with the following:
"Cabin furnishings may disappoint those brought up with BMW's driver-focused dashboards, but we think the new layout is neat and efficient. The instrument cluster in front of the driver is supplemented by an LCD screen high in the center of the dashboard if the optional iDrive is specified. That location makes the display accessible to driver and passenger both and reduces the distance the driver must look away from the road to read it. The iDrive is the simpler version already used in the 5-series."
So now Motor Trend and Car and Driver have bothed anointed the E90 as a great step forward for the BMW 3 series. Happy to see BMW getting some props for taking their aging sedans into the next milennium. The old design was just looking ancient!

Of course, they failed to ask why a driver's car needs something as absurb as a TV monitor in it in the first place when the time-tested analog controls have proved extrremely effective and easy to use without ever having to look away (not even briefly) from the task at hand.
Idiotic.
But it's all about the bling now, isn't it.

You don't have to get the active steering and iDrive, but I'd wager that they'll be available on the next gen M3, and in the 1 series. They have to, or they'd only sell cars to the 15 TD clones. If they didn't cater to the badge, they would be out of business. Like it or not.

Up to a point in time, that was the case. But recently it seems technology is being used for technology's sake without improving the process in any way. I cannot see how i-drive is in any way a better way to set climate control or radio functions over the most recent non-i-drive methods. It simply isn't. i-drive requires multiple steps and it requires the driver to take their eyes off of the road. Pre i-drive, you could adjust either strictly by feel.
This is not an improvement.
Don't assume just because something is newer and "high tech" that it's better than it's precursors.
