"BMW's goose lays an egg that is still golden."
". . . All of this adds up to a car that runs smoothly, feels wonderfully safe and secure on the road, and drives with a rare precision. As our exclusive test numbers show, it is also very quick for a less-than-$40,000 compact sports sedan: 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds at 98 mph. Although these figures were recorded on a surface with poor grip, they match the performance of the current-generation 330i with Performance package with its much larger rear tires. Our Euro-spec test car ran a bit beyond its 155-mph governor. U.S.-bound cars will be limited to 130 with the standard suspension and 150 mph with the Sport package."

I have the Car and Driver article, and I just find the 5.6sec number hard to believe. They said the pavement was also slippery while doing the test, which makes it even harder to believe. Think about it, 255hp with approx 221 lbs-ft for torque on a ~ 3400lbs car. I'd really like to see a head to head shoot out with the 05 G35 and Acura TL, both these cars have more horsepower and torque.

If somebody could post graphs maybe we could do an overlay and compare them. Peak power numbers rarely tell the whole story.
Aside from the power curves, there is also gear ratio differences, drivetrain losses, weight transfer issues (i.e. FWD on the TL), tire grip, etc. to consider
The most interesting test would be to bring all of those cars to the 'ring. That would be much more telling than a 0-60 time IMHO.

There's a chance the numbers were extrapolated from the quarter mile time and speed. I'm sure magazines do this all the time.
I'm sure the e90 would outperform an e46 on the 'ring because weight isn't an issue once up to speed, if I recall correctly.

The effect on BMW sales might not be immediate but it could be a turning point for what has until now been a very successful business. Considering all that BMW stands to lose if their cars don't perform better in each new generation I don't think they would let this happen.

That is around 10sec faster then the E46...!
