steptronic
if you use the steptronic (shifting mode), is it faster than the automatic? If so, how much (or use the e46 as an example)?

Well, if you put it in sport mode I doubt there is much of a difference whether you shift or not.
There will be a difference between sport and regular mode though, as sport lets you get the revs up higher before it shifts.
