Now that both of these cars can be picked up around the same price, what would you choose & why?

I would pick the M5 becuase of the extra HP and the four doors, which I use quite often.

While i do love the look of the E46, I give the E39 the edge in that dept. with the added value of hp, and four doors.......sexxy

Having both a 5 and a 3 albeit not of the M variety, I would go for the M3. I think the M3 will be more fun to drive than the bigger, heavier although more powerful M5.
