I read somewhere here that you should buy two Vignette stickers when traveling to Austria because you will lose the one you stick to the windshield somewhere between Europe and the dealer.
Well, I was too cheap to buy two Austrian or Swiss vignettes, but I did put a note (written in both English and German) on the windshield asking that the stickers not be removed.
My car arrived at the dealership today and my salesman has confirmed that the stickers are STILL ON THE CAR. Woohoo! I am excited only because they are fun souvenirs of a great trip.
Anyway, if you are attached to your vignettes and want to keep them in the U.S., try writing a note. It seemed to have worked for me!

I think its the dealer that cleans and preps your car that removes them including the ED Plate.

My last delivery, for my 5er, the sticker and the plate were gone when the car got to the dealer. My first e.d., I had all of my books for my studies (I was just finishing Uni in München) in the trunk and they arrived fine.

My vignette survived without a note. Not the flashlight though.

I didn't bother sticking either the Austrian or Swiss vignettes on the windshield, so I just brought them home with me as a souvenier.
