Munich in December...yes yes yes...snow....rain...cold... We pick up our E60 on 12/16 and want to take a day trip to Salzburg to do the "Sound of Music" tour at 9am on 12/17. My AutoRoute program shows that it is 90 miles mostly on A8. The tour is 4 hours long and yes, it's tourist oriented..but that's us! Has anyone taken that route in December? Do you think it's do-able as a day trip if we get a very early start on 12/17? Will we be taking our chances through passes, etc. if it snows? I know I know...we should stay in Salzburg but we need to be back for Sunday in Munich and a drive back to Tuebingen to get someone back to school there for Monday! Thanks! |

Thanks! | I don't have any personal experience driving the Autobahn in winter, but the autobahns are the lifeblood of Germany's economy, so they are very well kept, even in winter.
What I _have_ done is take the A8 route from Munich to Salzburg. There are no real mountain passes to traverse, so that won't be an issue.

You'll be able to do it but there will be a speed limit most of the way depending on the weather, so leave early. Its a heavily travelled route so its also possible to have some congestion on the autobahn there. Its better to have good luck and get there early instead of having to rush to get there before the tour starts.

Thanks! | It makes sense to go to Salzburg the day before; it's a fairly quick drive but there's always the chance of construction or traffic. After the tour you could easily drive back to Munich since you have to be there the next day anyway. Would recommend the restaurant of the Hotel Goldener Hirsch for lunch - including Salzburger Nockerl for dessert (must be ordered at start of meal) - while you are in Salzburg.

Thanks! | We left Munich at about 9 AM heading to Innsbruck on the A8 about 23 weeks ago and it was very congested getting out of Munich for about the first 45 mins - then sweet. It was snowing pretty hard too.

12/17 is saturday. Expect heavy traffic at 7 am, the time you have to leave, due to skiers heading for the Alps.
You can find a good flash animation of the traffic situation here
