some time ago I remember someone saying about the Michellin road atlas to use as a guide while using ED. A search on amazon.com didn't yield any results - can someone point me in the right direction??

Are you looking for a road map or are you looking for hotel/restaurant/tour guides? If you're looking for the road map, while michelins are good I'd recommend a Falk Maxi Atlas or ADAC Maxi atlas. You can get them (as well as the Michelin Maps) at Travel Essentials to name one source.
If you're looking for the Michelin Red/Green guides you can get them at the same place Travel Essentials.
After a quick search, Michelin does have a website for its travel guides and maps -ViaMichelin. I forgot the "via" part in my search so I missed it before I typed all the above. They also have good online route planners.

I bought my Michelin roadmap for Germany, Austria and Switzerland from Amazon. What I liked about the maps are that all scenic drives are highlighted and so also look out points so you can plan alternate routes to get to your destination at a leisure pace driving through some beautiful countryside.
The question I have is, does the ED NAV maps give an option for scenic routes to get to a destination?.

I have encountered that some directions are absolutely dead wrong.

I got by with a bunch of mapquests and a big map of german highways.
An aside, Lonely Planet seems to be a good travel book. Avoid LG "Let's GO" series - their advice about neighborhoods and nightlife sucks.
