When are you folks changing your transmission fluid/filter? 60,000? 90,000? or subscribing to the "lifetime theory" Any comments or suggestions welcome.

My car will need brakes pretty soon, so I'll wait until I take it in for brake service and have the brake fluid, tranny fluid, fuel filter, and coolant changed at the same time. -Mark

The techs in the Roundel club magazine recommend 30k change intervals...being naive, I went along with that and had it done. It was rather pricey, I think it came to close to $400 for both transmission and differential (special BMW fluids), at the dealer. Dealer recommended (and others on this board) that 45k to 60k is probably plenty conservative enough.

Quote: Heya ketchup, I've never been wronged by a dealer, but... I've read horror stories about dealer techs being incompetent and less than thorough. Also, dealers charge a whole lot more than a good indy shop - plus, I like to stay loyal to shops who treat me and my car well (like Bullet). My Extended Service contract pays up to $100/hr for labor, but dealers typically charge around $115/hr. Last but not least, I can usually get an appointment at Bullet within a day or two, if not the same day, whereas the dealer wants five to seven. -Mark
