Got new Michelin Tires !
I just got new tires for my car Michelin Energy MXV4 PLUS spend about $850 for all 4 tires. Before i was getting the Continental ContiTouringContact CH95 which were orginally on the car, but the tire salesmen who knows bmw's quite well said that most 5 series came with these tires as OEM, and the Continental were of much cheaper brand and crappy quality. When frist drove the car after getting the tires installed i saw a big difference. The car performed better, and handling had gotten better. I was just wondering why would just a big car company like BMW use such low quality tires as the Continental ContiTouringContact CH95 to put on as orignal equipment, i know that not all people got these tires, and were lucky enough to get the Michelin Energy MXV4 standard. The michelins offer me what the Continental's never could Ride quality, i know that now. Before BMW used these tires in all their cars, i know my 96 318i came with the Michelin Energy MXV4, which i think is the main reason i bought the car, grip and handling wise. When i first bought this car i thought that Continental's were of higher quality than the Michelin's thinking the bigger the model the better the tire. I was just wondering what did you guys get as Standard OEM tires, and please give me some insight to this as well. | | Reply » Got new Michelin Tires ! | There are many reasons that cars come with more than one tire as standard, the two biggest are the manufacturer does not want to be dependant on a single supplier, so most will "dual source" on contract. The second is purely economics; the "low bidder". So you end up with two tires, both were offered on low bid, but one may be significantly better than the other (while both still meet the manufacturer's specs).
My 540 came with Dunlop 2000E tire with a tread wear rating of 140, yet they were not particularly sticky tire (in fact the rears lasted almost 40k miles!). Replaced with Goodyear F1 GS-D3 with a tread wear rating of 280, yet these offer WAY more stick in dry and wet. Go figure.

When I changed the tires on my 3 some years ago, I went from the Conti's to the Dunlops that were rated much higher than the Conti's by the Tire Rack and you know what...I liked the Contis much better. Personal Preference.
I'll leave you with this...One of the lowest rated tires on Tire Rack is the MICHELIN Primacy. I think that out of 10, it has a satisfaction rating of 4. Just awful. It was one of the 2 'standard' tires on the US Sport Package 5's, so why would BMW use this 'crappy' tire on the 5 series when so many other tires are available?
Well, guess which other car uses the Primacy as its' standard tire? The Maybach. So why would MAYBACH use this 'crappy' tire on the 62 when so many other tires are available?
Of course, there is a reason.
