 5 Series speakers???

Looking to replace all factory speaker, can I do this myself? Also, what speakers are recommended for upgrade, thinking about infinity's? Any other reco? Need to purchase a cd changer as well with mp3 playback etc, any recommendations?

Also, looking into infinity basslink, any opinions on that? If possible, web links will be appreciated for the parts that I seek.

Thanks to all for the help! Latin

First, check out www.bmwtips.com under tips&tricks.

Second, I would recommend not replacing the rears, they are a PITA to get to and, if you are using them simply for rear fill, not as big a deal as replacing the fronts.

Third, if you replace the speakers without replacing the amp, you will need to do some funky things to make it work, like rely on the stock crossovers and not use the aftermarket ones. This may (will) suboptimize the quality of the new speakers, but you have no choice. Using both sets of crossovers (the stock ones are built in to the amp) is not wise, so don't think of doing that. BTW, lots of people have done this and been happy, so don't let me talk you out of it, just expect a bit less quality than is otherwise possible.

Fourth, there is a drop-in Alpine MP3 capable changer: http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums...3049186-1.html

Fifth, speaker choices are personal, listen to some and make your own decision. Infinity, Focal, Canton, MBQuart, Diamond Audio, .... Lots of good choices out there and everyone will pimp what they own (mine is in there, btw, but I leave it to you to make an informed decision by using your ears).

Lastly, basslink is a great choice if you are leasing and want to be able to easily return everything to stock, though it is cheaper and better to go with a custom sub built and installed by your local shop. A single 10-12" sub with 100+ watts should suffice for most. If you don't have the ski pass-thru, you may want to consider having the shop cut a hole over the rear center armrest.

I would suggest looking into the M-audio subs while on BMWtips....I did that upgrade and it was incredible how much improved the bass was. Less sacrifice of trunk space too, compared to the Bass Link.

To add to my "do some funky things" comment regarding replacing speakers without replacing the amp ...

For example, if you want to replace the front 3-ways with aftermarket 2-ways (a smart move since aftermarket 3-ways are expensive), you would leave the stock midrange in place and simply wire the new midwoofer to the existing midwoofer wires and do the same for the tweeters but NOT use the aftermarket crossover.

Why is this suboptimal? Well, the stock crossover assumes a particular speaker and your aftermarket speakers are definitely not exactly the same. You will also be using two new drivers and one existing one and mixing speakers is typically not great.

My install went in two chunks. After the first step I had the stock amp/crossover with aftermarket speakers wired as discussed above and it sounded very good. After the second step I had an aftermarket amp/crossover and it sounded great.

Thank for all the help, my take is that I am going to puchase all the speakers and have a custom shop install them that way I can avoid doing any mistake. I just pay for the labor and not the parts.

That won't limit your mistakes, only change them. Paying someone else to hack up your e39 actually sounds like more of a mistake than doing it yourself. Seriously, you had best find a really really good installer if you are going to trust them with this car. It's NOT a toyota.
