Is BMW's C.P.O. plan just B.S. ?
Greetings from Canada. I'm new the BMW scene so please forgive my ignorance. I've been auditioning a few 2003 530's for consideration. I've seen so called "Certified Pre-Owned" BMW's available. Do other forum members see this as a benefit or just another marketing scheme ? As far I can tell, CPO and Carfax does not identify collision damage to a vehicle. I mean really, how bad does a car have to be wrecked before it get a salvage title? In any event your comments are appreciated.

From one side i think bmw rips you off for their "certified pre-owned cars" but if they cover you bumper to bumper, and offer full service until 120,000km, then its worth it. See we bought our car from a private party, when the car had about 85,000km, and since then i've spent nearly $10,000 on the car for repairs and serrvice. Before i was consdering buying a 2001 BMW 530i Black/Black with DSP. It was going for $44,000 at the bmw dealership, but then i saw a 2000 bmw 528i as a private sale and was going for $32,000 exactly the same car, except slight difference in exterior, and a little less power which wasn't a big concern for me that time. I love my car and everything, but i would have gone for the 530i if i knew how much parts and service costed for a 5 series. And plus a discontinued model. Johnny let me know which years you are considering, i can help you out with your car hunt.

only 28,000km, and black/black !
If i noticed one thing, there aren't many good 530i's out there with good prices, this is the best one in my opnion price wise, km wise. This car is so good, i might even consider trading in my 528i for this

Then I had the dash pixels go out, then the radiator, then the back trunk/tailgate latch, nd just two weeks ago the A/C compressor. All covered by CPO. Yes, I paid a little extra for the car buying it from a dealer -- but I am glad I did.

They may state something in their paperwork, but your best defense is to take the car to a body shop and spend $75 to have them look it over on a lift. It won't take them more than 30 minutes to give it a thorough inspection.
I believe the CPO is worth the money...though it does not cover everything, it does cover a number of significant components, and if you end up selling the car, can be transferred, which is a nice selling point. Sounds like John G got his money's worth.
