New to the site. I have a '99 528I sport, 5 speed. What's the one thing I can do to boost horsepower? Dinan, JC chip? K&N filter? I dont want to spend alot of money.

I dont want to spend alot of money. | Hmmm, please define "alot of money" and we can help you. Normally, "boosting horsepower" and "cheap" tend to go in opposite directions on a graph.
I'm guessing a CAI might be for you. I doubt you would be able to tell the boost in power but the engine will growl a bit more.

A "chip" (really, it is software) might give you the most power gain but I'm not sure you can get one for under 4-500 dollars.
Dinan has everything you want/need but they hurt the wallet pretty good....

I was thinking total package under $500. Do K&N filters really make a difference? thanks

you could probably do that "total package" for $500 on a honda, but with a BMW your going to be shelling out some cash for that few added horsepower. IMHO if you were concerned about power a 540 would have been the better choice, so i would personally leave it as is and maybe just look at some asethetic mods (ie m-tecknic bumpers, wheels, etc that would fit your price range). Im just stating that you probably dont want to spend too much for 3hp+!!

agreed with all said...
CAI and muffler are prolly the best bets. But you will be pushing your $500 budget. I have those mods and I dont know if I have more HP or not...but one thing is very evident. I got much improved throttle response. The car just pounces off the line. And yes the SOUND is amazing. But again...I have the 540...so the V8 needs to breathe and now I let it...it really sounds nice.
