 Questions re: 2000 528i

I'm looking at a 2000 528i Sport for sale by a private party. The car has an "M" steering wheel with the red & blue thread, and the chrome numbers identifying the car as "528i" are not present on the trunk lid. Relative to these two (2) items, is this how the car came from the factory, or were they modifications made by a previous owner? The current owner doesn't seem to know. Also, the car has a squeaky-clean CarFax, but the skeptic in me doesn't want to believe it for no other reason than I'm just a skeptical person. That said, what's the probability that the CarFax is unreliable? Thanks for the input.

pjt,

You can try doing what I did. Take the VIN# to the closest BMW dealer and ask them to run a report on all of the work that has been done on the car. The printout should include all of the factory options that were present when the car was sold. My local dealer had no problem doing this for me. I hope this helps.

i believe the e39 sports package comes with the 3 spokes M steering wheel.
i don't know what the deal is with the 528i emblem on the trunk, the owner might have taken it out, because it looks cleaner that way, or he had an rear end accident where he had to swap out the rear trunk. if you have an access to have the rear license plate removed, you will see the white VIN# barcode underneath the rear license plate location if the car has never been into accident, but if you don't see that white VIN# barcode, the car might have been into accident.

good luck!

Carfax is good to check the registration history, that's about it. If the vehicle was involved in a major accident and it was not reported to the DMV, then it will not show up on the carfax report. Getting a carfax will let you know if the current owner is the original owner or not.

I suspect the current owner, or previous if there was one, debadged the car, or ordered it from the factory that way. It is possible to do.

The M-Sport steering wheel was part of the sport package equipped car. If the original shift knob is present it will also have an ///M insignia on it.

If would be in your best interest to have the vehicle evaluated by an independent BMW mechanic, have them do a pre-purchase inspection. They will check it out mechanically and also be able to measure paint thickness to expose any body work that may have been done. Money well spent if you are skeptical about the vehicle.

Good luck!

Might be because the original owner got the "528i" badge removed either because he didn't like rear badging or he wanted people to think for appearance purposes it was a 540i. When you buy the car, u actually have an option of deleting rear badging. Persoanlly i like the model description, gives the car a name. Now is the "M" elbem at the back? Most sport package 5 series i see have the "M" badging at the back

Are you being fascetious?
I've never seen the M badge on the back of a sport package 5 series unless the dude was a poseur.
