 E39 Auto Trans Fluid Spec

I plan to change the filter and whatever fluid I can get out. I know its a lifetime fill but I don't feel good leaving it in. I now have 60,000 miles on a 97 528i. What fluid is required - the manuals only say check a dealer for specs? What fluids have you guys had good success with. I only want to use a synthetic. Thanks

Go to www.bmwtips.com/Engine & Transmission section. The info you need is in SD92-113.pdf & 114.pdf. A couple of things. Keep it CLEAN! Use only the recommended ATFs. Make sure you get the level correct and at the right temperature. I used a temperature probe for my digital voltmeter but have heard of folks using those neat little meat thermometers that they sell in the supermarkets to measure the ATF's temperature.
