 E38 armrest in E39 - possible?

Hi, I'm new here and judging from what I read so far I'm in the company of some real experts here.

Having by now contracted a mild case of Mod fever myself I wonder it the following interior mod is possible at all and what it would cost in work/materials.
My dad has an E38 728 with the BMW phone. The sliding central armrest has the phone and to each side of this there are two softish leather covers, covering small storage trays - very cute, very practical too.
I have an E39 with the sliding armrest which has the phone tray, and to the sides of that two rather hard leatherette pads (ouch), no covered trays. I'm toying with the idea to put an E38 armrest into the E39, to increase comfort and storage space. Anyone know if that's possible? I don't know how the E38 armrest looks from below.

Some of you will say: Why not put the full-leather "Euro" armrest in, the tilt/(slide) version with the "large" storage tray beneath and the leather-covered pad? Reason is that I need the phone tray and I've used the space below the armrest for the Nokia phone electronics box already (and indeed, I could theoretically move that to its BMW stock location unter the dash but I'd have to take apart most of the dash for that - no way!).

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about that-- but one thing to consider is that, atleast in the e38s i've been in w/ that armrest, it makes annoying creaking noises when you put your arm on it. Given how many parts are shared between the e39,e39 I bet you can do this w/ some modding of the center console "hump" where it mounts. I know the e38's sliding armrest feels like it rolls smoothly (and has a little lever to release and lock it) whereas the e39s feels like its just friction that holds it in place nad doesn't glide as smoothly.

if the above will help you much but check it out nevertheless.

@all: thanks for the info. The one I saw (on my dad's 728i) did not creak - probably a question of lubrication?

I'd found the Ultimate Guide to Armrests aleady, but while it is quite complete about the E39 armrest, it doesn't say anything about the E38. I've taken my armrest off to have a look and it would seen to me that the sliding base connects to the armrest itself by way of four Torx screws only. This has made me think I could perhaps just take the top part of the E38's armrest (minus the base) and somehow fix (bolt?) it to the E39's base. Anyone know if that's feasible? The E38 armrest is a bit longer - do you think that will impede the movement of the handbrake lever on the E39 if slid forward? Doing that I suppose I'd lose the lever and ratchet mechanism from the E38's armrest, but I think I can live with that.

Someone on Roadfly wrote he'd done the same mod but fixed the armrest to the base with double-sided tape. I don't think I like that idea, to be honest. What do you think?

The E39 armrest also connects to its base via 4 torx screws. Do you know anyone at all with an E39? That would probably be your best chance to see if this could be done or you might need to bite the bullet and pick up an E39 armrest from your dealer.

Hi Ågent99,

Sorry - I seem to have managed to thoroughly confuse you (and who else?)
What I meant was to put an E38's armrest into my E39 (for more comfort - leather stuffed tray covers instead of hard vynil with nothing under it).
I know the E39's armrest bolts to its base with 4 Torx screws (seen it on mine) - what I'd dearly love to know is how the E38 armrest is fixed? My dad has an E38 and I've seen (and measured) his armrest - but somehow I didn't dare suggesting we disassemble it to take a look ...

Well, I might just go to the dealer tomorrow and ask how to fix it and how much, but experience tells me the price for new parts will hurt

Thanks anyway for the input!
