On the M models their is a 1,200 mile service. After reading Mile Miller's Tech Talk feature in the June 2006 issue of Roundel (at p. 117) discussing his recommendation to change the oil in the engine, gearbox and differential. Long story short, post-break in oil changes rid the engine and drivetrain from metal shavings and one would assume, prolong their life.
Of course, this is not scheduled maintenance and comes out of our own pocket.
We all have parted with lots of money to drive these wonderful cars, is this early maintenance a step that we should be taking even if BMW NA doesn't pay for it?

I think people would argue both ways. I for one haven't had the oil change, but I've only put ~7500 miles on the car in the first year. I *think* BMW will pay for the oil change after 1 year even if the car doesn't say it needs it.

I always have the oil/filter changed on my cars after break in (2,000 miles) on my dime, to flush ut the break in gunk. I also pay to have oil/filter changed at the half way point of the manufacturers' recommended interval (on my dime--tell them to not reset the service interval indicator), so I have my 545i oil/filter changed every 6,000 miles or so.

ive driven/owned/seen/etc
cars that have never had their diff oil changed, never had their tranny fluid changed (bar clutch changes at like 100k) and engine oil replaced every 3-5k with regular dino oil
average life of these cars: 200-400k
im running all 3 of my cars at 10k oil change intervals, with mobil 1 synthetic.
if the cars survive to 200k, thats good enough for me
