Wow, what a car. Could it replace my 5er when my lease is up? I dunno It certainly has its practicality limits, but man it was a nice ride! |

I test drove a Cayman S when they were first released and also liked it a lot. I've always felt the mid-engine Boxster handled better than the rear-engine Carreras. With the fixed roof, the Cayman's increased rigidity vs. the Boxster is very noticeable. A great car, but over priced--Porsche didn't want to cannibalize Carrera sales with too low a price.
Replacing your 5er? If you don't use the rear seats, perhaps. And if you like the creature comforts, quiet cabin and comfortable ride of your 5er, the Cayman might disappoint as a daily driver, since it's a pure sports car--with its positives and negatives. It does have a surprisingly large amount of storage space.
If you're seriously considering this, you should also test drive the new Z4 M coupe. I did find the Cayman S to be a bit disappointing in the low end torque department, and the M coupe should be quicker, while likely having a bit less responsive chassis.

All good points! My 'practicality' comment is because I do use the rear seat from time to time, both for 'junk' and for a 3rd or 4th passenger from time to time. No real solution to that!
I brought my 20 yr old son with me, and we were talking about the M Coupe too. Maybe I'll call my local dealer and see what they have in stock
The interior noise levels was noticeable immediately. I'm a 'creature comfort' kinda guy, and I would worry that the noise would grate on me after a while. The 5er provides such a great combo of drive and comfort. This issue will probably nix a Porsche as a daily driver for me. I spend a lot of time in the car.
One thing about the interior roominess of the Cayman. I've never liked the feeling of 2-seaters in the past, with the feeling that the rear firewall is right next to the back of my head. The Z3/Z4's and Boxters certainly give that feeling, but the Cayman, with its hatch back and small shelf back there, gives a totally different feel! The 2+2 Carrera takes it a step further, with room to throw my but I drove both and found the Cayman perfectly suitable

Since the Cayman is more than the Boxster, I heard sales were not that great. Seems people find it odd that a coupe is more than a vert despite the increased HP.
