Starting search for a 2004 530i in Southern California.
1. Any known problems regarding this model that I should be aware of (2004 is first of the new model style? did it have problems that would warrant avoiding it altogether and getting a 2005?)
2. Any issues to especially look for in 2004 530's re: evaluating potential purchases (drawbacks or must-have options)?
3. Lastly, I have a potential of having a used car dealer representative acquire one at auction. Anyone have experience in these auctions - e.g. if the going purchase prices for the cars (supposedly mostly all just off-lease vehicles) at auction are usually spot on with trade-in value OR if it is really a free-market price setting (get bid up over trade-in values). I am going to set a price and mileage ceiling for this dealer representative should I choose to go that direction, but am skeptical of what I might get as it would be a kind of sight unseen deal (aside from stated requirements of colors, options, price, etc.) However, a friend has already done this twice without complaint.
Any advice would be appreciated for this search process. Thank you.

Just as a rule of thumb, stay away from first year production of cars. Since you are looking for a used 530, I would suggest you look at the 2005s.

I'm not aware of any problems per se about the 2004 e60s, but I've always subscribed to theory to never get the first year production model. I'd rather wait until the car manufacturer irons out the bugs. Fortunately, I'm not the type that needs to be the first to have the new toy on the block.

I just noticed what you drive, C5 Vette. I'm a big fan of the Vette. My next car will hopefully be a Z06 Vette or Skyline GT-R. Of course, in addition to the bimmer.

Yes, I'd also love to have the NEW Z06 in my garage too, but the demand is too high right now. I'm not a big fan of the old z06 though.
