I recently noticed a nasty/ foul smell from my airconditioning within the first 10-15 seconds after I turn it on. It disappears there after. Has anyone have had the same problem in your car? What do I need to do to get rid of the bad odor? |

Check your microfilter. Probably, it's fully loaded.

I had this problem with my e46. I read that it has to do with the mold and/or mildew buildup in your A/C unit. And, I kinda have this in my e60. I just always keep the A/C 90% of the time and don't have to smell the odor. I know, it's not fixing the problem and only masking it.
If you do a search in bimmerfest, this topic has been discussed a lot. One of the solution was to turn on the heat at maximum for 10 minutes before turning the A/C on. Another solution would be to take the car into the dealership where they will remove the A/C unit and clean it out, but there is no guarantee that the smell will not return and to top it off, it's an expensive fix.
I've heard that BMWs are notorious for their stinky A/C units. This is one area where American know how trumps the Germans.

Thanks for your replies. I will have it checked by the dealer's shop to see if they can do anything about it. I'm glad I bought the 100,000 mile extended waranty.

I turn off my A/C about 1 minute before turning the car off and never have the problem. When I forget to do so, I get the smell.
