530 xi t in bad weather

just drove back from bend oregon to portland at night. hits some nasty snow with icy road conditions around the mount hood area. i have the standard 17 inch wheels with goodyear eagle rsas. the x-drive is awesome. i never felt the car waver even 1/8 of an inch. if i lived in vermont or minnesota or was driving to bend a lot i would definetly swap out for some form of winter tire, not worth around town here in pdx though since it is mostly rainy and 40s in the winter. still--even with the all-seasons i felt very sure footed...and it was nasty!!!

Glad to hear the results! I'll be in Mammoth this coming weekend -- hoping for some unplowed roads.

Sad to say, the roads were dry as a bone!!! Stay tuned for the next trip.

Has any one ordered or purchased a 530 IX with a manual tranny instead of the steptronic? Wondering how it performs in the snow versus the auto. My wife currently has a 2001 325XIT (with the previous generation awd) and she complains about it sliding around corners on snow covered roads. Does the new x-drive system correct this?

Nothing will "correct" improper driving. No AWD system will prevent sliding around corners. Is she driving appropriately in the snow? Some people take the attitude that they can drive on snow like they drive on dry pavement "because my car has awd and will correct for that."

I have an Xit with a manual transmission. We had a decent amount of snow during our November Euro delivery trip, and a couple storms since redelivery in January. The car performed perfectly in the bad weather - and thats with the 17" Goodyear all-seasons.

I havent driven the car in any deep snow yet - haven't had much snow this year - but I imagine the car will do just fine. Only problem is the low ground clearance. My prior car was an Audi allroad - the adjustable air suspension was great for deep snow. Other than that the x-drive seems to be every bit as good as quattro.

I also love the control of a manual shift, especially in bad conditions. Getting pretty hard to find in this class though. Thanks BMW for giving us the choice!!!!
