This is the first automatic transmission I’ve ever had. Unless I’m sitting in LA traffic (why I got Step) I really miss the manual. This will be the last automatic I get in any car with a sports slant. That said I think the Steptronic is about as good as an automatic can get aside from maybe the Merc. AMG autobox.
Anyway, is anyone else infuriated by having to push forward to downshift and pull backward to upshift? This seems so counterintuitive to me. I hate it. I have my car in manual mode about half the time and even after 6,300 miles I still occasionally push forward for an upshift. End of rant.

IMHO, it makes more sense to push/pull in the direction you are going (accellerating = being pushed backwards, decellerating=being pushed forwards).
It sounds to me however that an SMG would be the perfect trans for you.

I also used to like opposite way 535i worked. Problem I had was I had both at same time in 535i and X54.4i so always confused.
3 day old 550i sport with steptronic has fixed that - love it.

Yes!!! It's most annoying when trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd....instinctively I want to push up...but then I end up in 1st. I strongly dislike steptronic and am seriously considering selling my car (even though it will mean a big financial hit as its only 7 mo. old). I thought I could deal with this transmission…but I don’t think I can.

Lot of bad to very bad press for SMG on M5 though regarding city driving - and I'm still looking for someone who thinks it's good to drive around town.

We can help you reverse the pattern if you're interested. You just have to inform other family members who might be driving your car not to follow the -/+ signs on the shift gate, should they need to drive in MD mode.
