After many months of pondering and test driving I decided today that the 530xi was the way to go for me. Now I need to sort out the options and find the right car (or order it as I want it, unfortunately European Delivery just does not work for me right now, maybe next time). So, I have a couple of questions:
1. Comfort access: Does this allow you to open any door or just the front doors? I know on some other cars I have tested the keyless entry only worked on the front doors. That would sway me away from the extra $1000 on the BMW since the whole purpose for me would be to allow me to open the door without having to find the key when I've got my son in my arms and trying to get him in his car seat. The salesman was 90% certain that it worked on all 4 doors for the 5 and I've seen some posts on this board that suggest that is true, but would like confirmation from someone who owns a 5 with comfort access.
2. I have always bought cars in the past, but am considering a lease given the low lease rates right now for the 5. I saw something in Consumer Reports that suggested that you could try to negotiate a better price on purchasing the car when the lease was up rather than pay the residual value. Is that something that actually happens in real life? I'm looking at the 3 year lease with 10K a year, that leaves a residual of 63%. If I decide I want to buy the car when the lease is up, but the going rate for the car is less than 63% is it possible to negotiate a better price? It seems like this should be possible since almost everything in life is negotiable and it would save BMW the costs of processing the car for repeat sale (though they may just sell these cars at auction).

1. Yes, any door - as long as you have the key with you (just tested this on mine) 2. I heard the BMW will not negotiate - but other leasing companies will. Maybe someone can confirm?

BMW will typically not negotiate with the owner. However the dealer can buy the car at the wholesale price from BMWFS and you can then buy it from them. You can then ask them to CPO the car and get an extended warranty. You will need to find a dealer willing to work with you on that.

That's cool that 5 series owners get comfort access on all 4 doors. It's only $500 on an e90 but it only works on the front 2 doors and the trunk. It's a must have with the Start/Stop ignition.

I love Comfort Access. I walk up to the rear, driver's side door, grab the handle (my doors unlock), open the door and toss my briefcase in the back seat. I jump in the front seat and before I'm even fully seated my foot is on the brake and I've hit the Start button. While the car is starting I'm shifting in to drive. As I pull away, I'm driving left-handed having fastening my seat belt with a quick motion of my right hand.

The only problem I have with comfort access is delay you experience with iDrive starting up. Once you are in the car it takes about 20 seconds for iDrive to start and show the accept screen and about 30 seconds before you can use the voice commands. I guess this is because it starts to boot when the door handles are touched and unlocked. But using the unlock button on the remote will start the boot process while you are walking to the car and iDrive will pop right to the accept screen as soon as you hit the Start/Stop Button.
Touching the drivers door handle will unlock all doors.
other than this Comfort Access is great.
