Hi all,
Considering getting a new 525i with manual. Is there a demand for stick shift or do 90% of the people get the auto? I honestly don't care too much about resale value (well to a certain extent), but wife prefers an auto and I want to get the stick shift (isn't that something new...) It will be my primary vehicle and she knows how to drive a stick if need to (although don't like to do so)
So, anyone have experience of selling or buying a preown 5 series with manual? How does the resale value compares with one with auto? I am sure there's less deman, but would a less supply kind of equal things out?
Thanks for any input. A bimmer with stick shift has always been my dream combo...

I don't believe a manual has any effect on the resale value (my opinion) - but you will be limiting your resale audience since more people want automatic (look at the sales numbers).
If there is any way to step up to the 530i - I think you'll be much happier with the manual option.

It's true that at least 90% of the buyers out there want auto. But it's also true that less than 10% of the available cars are stick. You may have to be more patient when it comes to selling it used, but you shouldn't have much difficulty.

I am taking delivery of my 525i stick shift on thursday. My E46 was a stick shift and it didn't seem to lower the resale value, it just might take you a little longer to sell it.

If you later go to sell it to a dealer, you'll hear that because only 10% of buyers want a stick shift they won't pay you as much for it. That's just a fact of life buying a stick.

Thanks for any input. A bimmer with stick shift has always been my dream combo... | My experience with my other cars that have been stick at the time of trade-in is that the dealer always tries to low ball oyu and use that as an excuse. When I was actively looking to get a 5series, I was unable to find any new stick for test driving. It is rare to find here in the US. I actually know 3 friends that own older model 5series stick shift. I say buy the one you like and deal with the trading in it down the line.
