I am considering buying a 545i, well actually most likely a 550i, and am curious what type fuel economy you guys with 545i are getting. BMW's website lists 18 city and 26 highway for the 545 with automatic, which is the transmission I most likely would get.
Those EPA estimates are not bad at all. In fact, they are better than the 16 city and 24 highway for my e46 M3. I average 20 mpg with the M3 in a combination of about 50% city/highway driving. The cost of gas has got me thinking about a 530 instead of the 545/550, if the actual fuel consumption is significantly less than the 18/26 estimates on BMW's website.
I will be getting sport package, which shouldn't matter, unless BMW puts a different rear end gear in the sport package cars.
Thanks

I'm getting 19/25 with my 545i/SMG. I'm planning a very long trip in September so we'll see how it does there. I'm also planning to get an '07 530i/550i and am also on the fence about which one to spring for. The cost difference doesn't bother me near as much as potential gas mileage. I fear we'll see $4 gas by next summer....

I get 27 mpg on the open highway. 21 mpg mixed driving-about 70% highway, 30% city. Only around 15 mpg 100% bumper to bumper city driving.

I have 4500 miles so far and am averaging just under 20, but keep in mind... this is air conditioning season.
Pure freeway driving..... I'm at about 27.5.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the EPA estimates of 18 city and 26 highway are close to waht people are getting.

Yeah, I get very close to the EPA estimates. In fact, pure freeway I probably approach 28. This is incredible efficiency for such a powerful V8.
